Estadio San Mamés, also known as La Catedral, is a football stadium in the city of Bilbao. It is the home ground of Athletic Club de Bilbao, the most popular sports club in Bilbao. They won several national championships and they are known as the Lions of San Mamés, because their stadium was built near a church called San Mamés. It was said Mamés was an early Christian, thrown to the lions by the Romans. The story goes that the lions refused to eat Mamés and later, he was made a saint. Estadio San Mamés has a maximum capacity of 39 000, making it the largest sports venue in the city, and it was inaugurated in 1913. It was renovated for the 1982 FIFA World Cup and it hosted FIFA World Cup matches of Czechoslovakia, England and Kuwait.
