The Veltins-Arena is a stadium in the German city of Gelsenkirchen that is known as one of the most modern stadiums in Germany. Originally named the Arena AufSchalke, it opened in 2001 as the new home ground of FC Schalke 04, the most popular sports club in Gelsenkirchen. The stadium hosted the 2004 UEFA Champions League final and five matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, including a quarter-final. Accredited as an UEFA five star stadium, it has a capacity of 61 000 for league games because of standing places and an all-seated international capacity of 53 000, making it one of the largest German stadiums. The Veltins-Arena features a Teflon-coated fiberglass canvas retractable roof, which spans the entire football stadium.
