The Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion is a stadium used mostly for football matches in Stuttgart. It was known as the Neckarstadion, named after the nearby river Neckar, before 1993. It opened in 1933 and it was known as the Adolf-Hitler-Kampfbahn. The name Neckarstation was used since 1949. It is the home of VfB Stuttgart, one of the biggest football clubs in Germany. The maximum capacity is 55 000, after completion of the current refurbishment of the eastern stand in 2005. The stadium hosted four matches of the 1974 FIFA World Cup and six matches of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. It also hosted two finals of the European Cup, since 1992 known as the UEFA Champions League. Real Madrid CF defeated Stade de Reims in 1959 and PSV Eindhoven were crowned European champions after defeating SL Benfica in 1988.
