The Weserstadion is a football stadium in Bremen. It is the home of Werder Bremen, one of the most successful football clubs in Germany. The club sells out almost every home game. The stadium is scenically situated on the north bank of the Weser River and it is surrounded by lush green parks. The city centre is not far away from the stadium. It presented a bid to be a host city of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, which was ultimately turned down. The stadium opened in 1924. The recent capacity of the Weserstadion is 42 000, of which 10 000 are standing places.
